Dr Who Experience

If you’re one of the millions who can’t get enough of the Time Lord, you’ll love the BBC’s Doctor Who Experience, situated on the vibrant waterfront of Cardiff’s Mermaid Quay. But you don’t have to be a die-hard fan to enjoy what is described as an interactive journey which “takes visitors on a spectacular adventure through time and space”.

I visited with my two children – aged 13 and seven – and both were intrigued by what was on offer; it’s fair to say, however, that Peter – my youngest – didn’t find the huge collection of original props, costumes and artefacts overly exciting; this sizeable chunk of the Experience is, in my view, more suitable for teenagers and adults.

The unusual-shaped building contains the obligatory shop stocked with official merchandise and a café selling drinks and snacks. Currently, there is no on site parking so use the nearby NCP car park.

All of us agreed that the best part of the Experience was the initial interactive walk-through, narrated by Matt Smith, in which you take part in an exhilarating adventure. Stepping through a crack in time, you’re tasked with helping the Doc, armed with his Sonic Screwdriver, escape his enemies’ clutches; during the journey, you’ll help fly the Tardis and confront some of his scariest foes, including the Daleks and Cybermen.

Online tickets are cheaper than paying on the day and the Experience is open daily throughout school holidays. During term-time, it’s closed on Tuesdays. Family tickets at the time of our visit cost £38. If you’re a Dr Who fan you’ll feel it’s money well spent.

If you’re planning an overnight stay, the St David’s Hotel and Spa, designed to resemble a ship out on the bay, is an ideal choice. Sitting across the water from the Doctor Who Experience, it’s just a ten-minute walk away. All bedrooms have floor-to-ceiling windows and many enjoy stunning views across the bay.

Note: The exhibition in Cardiff will, sadly, be closing during Summer 2017.
