One of the pluses of visiting Norfolk is that you won’t struggle when it comes to sourcing fine accommodation – there are plenty of excellent places to stay throughout the county.
But if you’re after some Georgian charm, try Braydeston House in the pleasant village of Brundall – you won’t be disappointed.
This fine Georgian country house has plenty of parking space and is set amid wooded gardens. It’s not overlooked and the grounds are very spacious. Despite being adjacent to the main road through the village, it retains a fair degree of privacy; in fact, that probably explains why we had trouble spotting the place when we first arrived in the village!
Your host is the friendly owner, Ann Knox, who does everything she can to make your stay as comfortable as possible – and she’s knowledgeable, too, about the local area.
Ann serves a tasty breakfast in her conservatory, overlooking the expansive garden; and as she only lets out two rooms – a twin upstairs with ensuite bathroom and a double-bedded room on the ground floor with ensuite and even a kitchen (both have TV, radio and tea/coffee-making facilities) – it’s a quiet and relaxed place to stay.
Although there is a good selection of local pubs and restaurants nearby for your evening meal, the beauty of the downstairs room is that it’s ideal for anyone interested in self-catering.
Brundall, situated on the River Yare’s north bank and famous for boat-building, is a perfect location for exploring Norwich, The Broads and the county’s coastline with its miles of sandy beaches.
After exploring this region of Norfolk, why not try the county’s north coast? Ann owns a holiday property – Loades Cottage – at Blakeney. This beautifully restored brick and flint fisherman’s cottage, which has been owned by the family for more than 40 years, sleeps three and is minutes from Blakeney Quay.
The cottage has an open-plan sitting room-cum-dining room, well-equipped kitchen, master bedroom with double bed, single bedroom and a bathroom. It’s tastefully decorated and offers everything you’ll need while holidaying in this part of the world.
Its location is perfect because Blakeney and the surrounding area are well worth exploring. Make sure, though, that you take a boat trip from Morston Quay to observe the seal colony at Blakeney Point, a four-mile long sand and shingle spit. But it’s not just home to hundreds of seals, it’s a rich habitat for insects and birds.
