So many of Madeira’s hotels enjoy stunning sea views and the Golden Residence, perched atop the rocky coastline and just two miles from downtown Funchal, is no exception. Whether you’re strolling around the landscaped lawns, relaxing on a sun-bed on the terrace or taking a dip in the pool, you can only be impressed by the fine views out across the vast Atlantic Ocean; the view along the coastline isn’t bad, either!

This modern four-star hotel – offering over 170 rooms – is divided into three blocks, each containing bedrooms and apartments. All types of accommodation have private balconies but the way the buildings have been designed means the majority of rooms have either a land view or side sea view.

I stayed in Room C021, however, which enjoys a full sea view. Mind you, the hotel’s location – above Praia Formosa, the longest pebble beach on the island – means that even land views are, on the whole, equally impressive.

The hotel’s website describes “avant-garde interiors and stylish décor” and it is an impressive place. So is the restaurant: if you’re eating at the Golden Flavours Restaurant, expect first-class service and great food. An à la carte menu is offered for lunch and dinner and can be enjoyed poolside on your sun-lounger if you’re relaxing and don’t want to budge. The breakfast buffet offers ample choice and you can choose to eat inside or out.

If you’re not after a big meal, you can sip a colourful cocktail at the Golden View Bar or opt for other refreshments, drinks or light snacks. Alternatively, try the Golden In Bar and relax on one of the comfy couches.

There is a calm, relaxing atmosphere throughout this hotel, which offers everything you could want, including a wellness centre, hairdresser, indoor and outdoor pool, fitness room, library, internet access and underground garage. If you’re in need of something else, Madeira Forum, arguably the island’s most modern shopping centre, is just a stone’s throw away.

Overall, this is an impressive hotel which I’d recommend for anyone visiting this wonderfully green island in the sun.
