Everyone, not just fans of Beatrix Potter, will enjoy stepping inside this magical world dedicated to the world-famous author whose wonderful tales continue to entertain adults and children alike.
Situated in the heart of Bowness-on-Windermere, just a stone’s throw from the lake itself, The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction is open every day (except Christmas Day). There is no on-site parking, but a pay-and-display site is situated just across the road.
One thing that struck me is just how much there is to see and do in what appears, initially, to be a relatively modest space; it’s all down to careful design and organisation.
Our visit began with an informative four-minute film introducing us to Beatrix Potter’s world, after which we entered the Attraction in earnest. Slipping through a door, you follow the route as it snakes its way through the various adventures described in Potter’s wonderful little books.
Beginning with The Tale of Jemima Puddle-duck, The Tale of Mr Tod and The Tale of Pigling Bland, all 23 stories are brought to life via myriad 3D displays, recreating sights, sounds and aromas; my children enjoyed meeting Squirrel Nutkin, Mrs Tiggy-winkle and other characters before we headed out into the Peter Rabbit Garden, again cleverly designed to “capture the very essence of Beatrix Potter’s world”.
Children will enjoy completing the free activity sheet as they wander around the garden where you’ll find various flowers, plants and vegetables growing, including lettuces like those nibbled by Benjamin Bunny and a gooseberry bush where Peter Rabbit got trapped in a net while escaping from Mr McGregor. The garden was designed by Richard Lucas, a Chelsea RHS Gold Winner, and opened in 2009, with Blue Peter gardener Chris Collins cutting the ribbon.
Your journey resumes inside, continuing your travels through the various adventures; other interesting offerings include a Beatrix Potter timeline and a virtual walks area where computer projection allows you to marvel at the beautiful Lake District landscapes which inspired the author’s work – oh, there is so much to see.

After your Beatrix Potter adventure, pop along to the family-friendly tearoom where an assortment of snacks, light meals (salad and veg are grown in the garden), cakes and other delights are served. We munched our way through a delicious cream tea. Kids are well catered for with their own hot food menu; alternatively, the Peter Rabbit Picnic Basket contains sandwiches, snacks, fruit and a drink. Everything you’d need, such as high chairs, baby food heating facilities and changing facilities are available.
At the time of visiting, family tickets (2 adults and 2 children) cost £18.50. Here, on Travellowdown.com, we’re conscious of family attractions and their value for money; well, I can honestly say that all of us, including my 12-year-old daughter and son, who’s six, thoroughly enjoyed our time wandering around this magical world spotlighting the stories and characters created by the legendary Beatrix Potter.
The owners have used the space effectively and there is much to enjoy. A visit is highly recommended – you won’t be disappointed.
