Pocket Mountains was launched in 2003 by adventure-loving Robbie and April. Their objective, according to their website, is to publish “accessible and inspiring pocket-sized guidebooks for anyone who likes a bit of an adventure”. And since opening their publishing house, they’ve done just that!

To date, their company has published many attractive handy-sized walking books covering regions the length and breadth of the British Isles – everywhere from the Outer Hebrides to Suffolk.

Each cute volume – the cover illustrations are delightful – profile 40 varied walks for all abilities. After an informative introduction to the area, subjects covered include history, transport, where to stay and, of course, a detailed overview of each route. The handy loose flap cover, meanwhile, can double up as a bookmark.

The walks are split into regions with a general overview of that particular area and what you can expect from the treks on offer. Once you’ve selected your walk, you’ll find usual information such as length of walk, expected duration and terrain.

The overall layout of the books (I reviewed the Shetland and Lake District titles) is very user-friendly with each walk having its own mini map and colour photo to entice you, along with snippets of history and landmarks you’ll see along the way.

Of course, in making the volumes qualify for pocket-sized status, the size of the font is fairly small. That said, these books are a great purchase for any keen walker and I certainly recommend them.
