Bristol Aquarium

//Bristol Aquarium

It’s one of Bristol’s premier attractions and no visit to the city is complete without spending time here. I’m talking about Bristol Aquarium where you literally come face-to-face with thousands of glorious sea creatures – everything from sharks and stingrays to octopus and seahorses.

I visited with my two children – aged five and eleven – and they enjoyed themselves so much that they didn’t want to leave. In fact, we all enjoyed the visit, wandering between each of the 50 displays, anxious to know what we’d see next.

One of the many highlights was a display representing the coral seas. We walked through an underwater tunnel, heads twisting in all directions as we watched the many creatures swimming by – the rays were simply stunning. Getting so close to these majestic creatures is fascinating for adults and children alike.

Other favourite features included a life-size recreation of a sunken ship, a Bristol harbour scene and the Amazon-like rainforest pools full of piranhas.

The Aquarium is designed in such a way that you undertake an intriguing journey covering everything from the British coast to the warmer tropical seas via the glorious underwater gardens seen in the Med.

Another benefit is the Aquarium’s location: slap bang in the middle of the city’s historic Harbourside, where nautical connections date back to the 13th century. Being that your tickets allow you to come and go, it’s worth popping outside to partake in a little sightseeing. Jump on board one of the many ferry boats running up and down the River Avon or hop on an open-top bus for a tour of the city’s sights.

But whatever else you do, don’t forget to pop back to the Aquarium for a final glimpse of the stunning exhibits.
