What an intriguing hotel this is. Take its location for starters: it clings to the edge of steep cliffs, affording fine views of not just Ponta do Sol, a tiny village sitting within a deep ravine on the island’s south coast, but along the rugged coastline as well; then, of course, there are the breathtaking views out to sea, something which most rooms enjoy.

The entrance is reached via an elevator which whisks you up from road level to the hotel which is divided into two sections and connected by a suspended walkway – it’s a fascinating layout. As the hotel’s website states, it’s a fine example of how “architecture and nature can be seamlessly joined”.

Once you reach Reception, you’re greeted by friendly, helpful staff who are able to book sessions at the hotel’s spa, arrange various island trips – including levada walks and three-hour excursions on the hotel’s own boat – and book you on the shuttle bus taking guests to, among others, Funchal (25 minutes away), Calheta Beach (one of two white sand beaches on the island, 10 minutes) and Ribeira Brava (the next village, 5 minutes).

I found my room spacious, well-equipped, comfortable and boasting a stunning view. In fact, I kept finding myself heading out onto the balcony, even though it meant I was left rushing to keep appointments I’d organised during my stay.

The hotel, which is the result of an old farmhouse being renovated, possesses an air of relaxation and tranquillity; that atmosphere is enhanced by its location and the sound of the Atlantic breaking onto the village beach below. Among the facilities on offer are outdoor and indoor swimming pools, bar and restaurant where generous portions are dished up in an airy, contemporary setting.

If you’re looking for a hotel on Madeira’s south coast, look no further than the Estalagem da Ponta do Sol – you won’t be disappointed.
