Trevella Park – Cornwall

We were delighted when Travellowdown was invited to sample one of Bridge Leisure Group’s holiday parks. The company owns and operates eight sites from Moray to Cornwall and has vast experience in the market.

We headed to Trevella Park at Crantock on the county’s northern coast. Just minutes away from Newquay’s seafront and with a large supermarket for stocking up on supplies nearby, this park makes an ideal base for a Cornish holiday.

There is a choice of accommodation here, including lodges, caravans, glamping and straightforward camping so there is something for everyone. We stayed in a three-bedroom caravan and, although not as spacious as some we’ve sampled, it was modern, well equipped and comfy. Contemporary in its décor, the caravan enjoyed central heating, double-glazing, Freeview TV, iPod dock, ensuite bathroom and patio/terrace with outdoor seating.

The site itself has decent facilities, including a well-stocked on-site shop, take-away, games room, mini-golf, large heated outdoor swimming pool (open May-September), two play areas and fishing lake. But you won’t find kids’ clubs or evening entertainment at Trevella – and that’s intentional. As the site’s promotional brochure states, a holiday here “puts you back in touch with nature: big skies and beautiful views, rolling fields, crashing waves and the world’s best beach – well, we think so!”

So, if you want clubs, cabaret during the evening and bingo sessions, this park isn’t for you. But if, like us, you enjoy tranquillity, a great location, greenery and yet still be close to the county’s main attractions, then consider Trevella, a multi-award winning holiday park which holds the respected AA 5-Pennant Gold Award. Another attraction for families is the free ranger-led adventure sessions during school holidays. Activities include crabbing, nature walks, pond dipping and bat walks.

A holiday at Trevella is about those simple pleasures which, sadly, many holiday park owners have forgotten. Here, kids can explore the outdoors, including “climbing trees, running free and building sandcastles on the beach”, as the park’s brochure explains.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the park and found the staff friendly and the holiday very relaxing. In fact, many holidaymakers have enjoyed their time so much at Trevella that they’ve bought their own caravan or lodge. The site has a wide range of new and pre-owned units to choose from, including two and three-bedroom options. So, if you fall in love with this neck of the woods, you won’t go far wrong if you decide to base yourself at Trevella.

In terms of recommendations to make the park even more enjoyable, access to the caravans could be improved. Although we should have been able to park next to the caravan, the lack of a hard standing area made this impossible during our visit. The grass had turned extremely muddy and was impossible to drive on if you wanted to get out again! Also, lack of a footpath to the caravan door meant having to walk across very wet and muddy grass to get in and out. Although I appreciate it had been a particularly wet period prior to our visit at Easter, I feel that walking across grass is not ideal, even in summer, and investment in this area would be wise.

But the park’s management are forward-thinking and always looking out for new opportunities and ways of bettering the site so this might be something they’re already thinking about.

One piece of advice for anyone planning a holiday in this corner of the UK, make sure you download the extremely useful App for Cornwall (www.appforcornwall.com), which provides a wealth of information about activities, attractions and accommodation across the county. It even provides info on everything from which beaches are dog-friendly to which markets sell local produce.

Seymac, who also produce the For One and All Guide and voucher booklet, has much experience and knowledge of the Cornish tourism industry. The company’s latest app is certainly a handy resource to have when planning your holiday: what’s more, it’s free!
